The short version

Your paper content never touches our servers. It travels from your device directly to the Anthropic API. We don't see it, store it, or process it.

1. Paper content

When you submit a PDF for review, the text of your paper is extracted on your device and sent directly from your device to Anthropic's API using your own API key. RedPen does not receive, store, or process your paper content on any server we operate.

Anthropic's commercial API terms of service explicitly exclude API data — including your paper content — from model training pipelines. You may consult Anthropic's privacy documentation for full details of how they handle API requests.

2. API logs

Anthropic retains API request logs for up to 7 days for abuse detection purposes, after which they are deleted. RedPen itself retains no logs of API requests.

3. Settings stored locally

Your API key and preferences (review depth, model choice) are stored locally on your device using Electron's secure storage. This data does not leave your machine.

4. Website analytics

This website does not use third-party analytics trackers. No cookies are set beyond those required for basic site functionality.

5. AI disclosure

RedPen is a pre-submission review assistant. Norms around disclosure of AI tool use in academic publishing are still evolving. We recommend you consult your target journal's author guidelines. Pre-submission critique tools are generally considered lower-disclosure scenarios than generative writing tools, but guidelines vary by journal and field.
